This trailer has many conventions stereotypically representing the genre of Horror, each representing conventions such as settings, technical code, iconography, narrative structure, character types and also themes.
Normally in a horror film trailer, such as this one, the setting would often be in a rural area rather than a city scene, making it seem more isolated. Settings for a horror are most likely to have an innocent feel, yet with the potential to bring up a ‘past’ of some sort – which is exactly what we see in this trailer. Following the stereotypical ideas for a horror setting, the trailer also reveals the main building to have different levels, in this case a basement/cellar. As usually recognised the basement may contain secrets or the memory of the past.
Horror films are often well known for the use of a hand held camera, as in this trailer also. Another use of technical code stereotypically used in horrors is POV shots in the eyes of the killer or the eyes of someone new, someone you may not recognise or someone not familiar to the film at that point.

Extreme high or low angles are often use, as shown here for the ‘House of Wax’ trailer. This often shows how the character is belittled by another character or to show more character. And extreme low angle may be used in the eyes of the victim looking up at a killer.

Extreme close ups are almost always used through out this trailer. ECU’s on a victim enables the audience to feel terror and be aware of the threat of something happening which is not included in the frame.

Iconographic lighting in a horror usually are presented low-key and high contrast to emphasise shadows, lighting also has the expectancy of coming from irregular angles, such as really low, really high or from another extreme angle. In this trailer the first ‘horror-like’ lighting we see is the light from the flame of the characters bonfire (as shown below) .

Other iconic horror mise en scene elements we see throughout the trailer are props such as video cameras, tools (such as knives), breakable objects, weapons (such as swords), mobile phones and glass, settings such as destructible buildings, campfire scene, abandoned town, woods, basements and inescapable staircases.
The character types including in the trailer, at the very beginning a group of possibly naïve/immoral youth or adolescents which as we see from the first clip are not willing to confront a potential threat although a protagonist shows the most courage in the situation. We are then lead to think another young male is the main protagonist until his power is lost and the original thought out to be protagonist turns out to be the ‘hero’. We are shown in the last clip there is a ‘final girl’ included also in the film.
